Frequently Asked Questions

When you’re organising your holiday there are always a few things that are helpful to know in advance, so here you’ll find all the important information you need to make your trip run as smoothly as possible. If you still have unanswered questions don’t hesitate to give us a call or drop us an e-mail.

Where can I buy food?
There is no supermarket in Invergarry! You will find a very small shop at the petrol station in the village selling basic provisions such as bread, milk, cheese, chocolate bars etc, which closes at 7pm on Saturdays and Sundays and 9pm on weekdays. There is also a slightly larger shop at the Well of the Seven Heads, 1 mile south of Invergarry on the A82, which stocks a larger range of basic provisions. However if you want to stock up on food for your holiday or you want to buy ingredients for a few meals we strongly advise you to stop at a supermarket on your way.

o From the south, use Morrisons in Fort William or the smaller Spar in Spean Bridge
o From the north, use the small grocery shops in Fort Augustus or a large Tesco store in Inverness.
o From Skye, use the Co-Operative supermarkets in Portree or Broadford.

Do you provide any meals?
No, we aren’t insured to provide any cooked meals for our guests. We have a large self-catering kitchen for you to prepare all your own meals. We can also supply self-catering breakfast packs on request for a small additional amount. These are aimed mainly at guests who arrive on foot and don’t want to walk anywhere else to find breakfast supplies after arriving. If you are arriving with transport you will find it is more cost-effective to bring your breakfast supplies with you, or to visit the local shops. If you decide you would like to order a breakfast pack, please let us know in advance to ensure availability.

Do I need to bring my own bedding?
We provide a clean set of bedding (duvet cover, sheet and pillowcase) so you don’t need to bring a sleeping bag or any other bedding. For hygiene reasons we request that you don’t bring any of your own bedding into the hostel.

Are towels provided?
Towels are not provided as standard but can be hired at a cost of £1 per towel.

When can we arrive?
We don’t have a 24hr reception – the only people working here are us, Matt and Jenny, and we need our beauty sleep! So please try to arrange your journey to arrive between 4pm and 10pm – this is especially important if you are staying in a shared dormitory, to avoid disturbing other guests. If you wish to arrive earlier or later you may do so by prior arrangement, but please be aware that if you arrive after 10pm there will be nobody to meet you – we will simply leave check-in instructions on the front door for you.

What is provided in the kitchen?
The kitchen is fully equipped with pots and pans, utensils, crockery, glasses and cutlery. If there is an implement you can’t find please let us know – if there isn’t one in the hostel kitchen we probaby have one of our own you can borrow. The kitchen has two fridges, one electric hob and one gas hob, plus one electric grill and oven. There is not a freezer, although one of the fridges has a small ice-box.
We provide all tea-towels, washing up liquid and dishcloths – if you run out just ask us for more.
We don’t provide teabags, milk or coffee, sorry.

Is there a pay-phone?
No, there is no pay-phone here. The nearest pay-phone is next to the Invergarry Hotel in the village, a 5-10 minute walk away. Our own telephone is not available to guests.

Will I get a mobile phone signal?
Most mobile phone networks receive a signal here, although you may need to wander around the hostel / grounds to find the best reception.

Can I plug in my electrical appliances?
There are a small number of electrical power points in every bedroom, so you can use hairdryers, shavers etc and charge up your electrical gadgets. If you are travelling from outside the UK please make sure you bring the appropriate adapter with you.

Can I borrow a hairdryer?
We have one hairdryer available for use by guests. Just don’t ask for it at midnight like somebody once did!

Is there an ATM nearby?
There is no ATM in the village for cash withdrawals. The nearest ATM is in Fort Augustus, and there are various ATMs in Fort William.

Can I camp in the garden?
Sorry but we do not allow camping in the garden.

How can I pay?
We accept payment by credit and debit card (not American Express) but we charge a fee of up to 3% for these transactions. To avoid any fees please bring cash!
